Becoming a "Stock Photographer"

This isn't the best place to post this I don't think, but so far you guys have been very helpful...

I'm just wondering if anyone makes any money off of stock photography. If so, can someone explain the business model and how much effort is needed to actually make money... I don't need to make a lot, but I thought if it was possible for a few extra dollars a month that that would be nice.

I know several people that make a very good living with stock photography. But it's like any other business, a lot of competition, hard work, legal headaches, etc.
