Absolutely agree with Steve Conway about the meaning of being Professional but, a professional must have some skills. Not wow skills but enough to achieve a good result. I could paste here the definition, but I don't have installed Babylon ^^

How about listing what does make a retoucher appear professional, assuming that by professional, you are trying to sell your services.

• Have a clean website that's easy to navigate and clearly represents the type of retouching work you are capable of achieving (Don't try to fake it. Even if you start off small, you will grow as you gain more experience).

• Have all of your contact information easy to obtain.

• Be ready to give a clear estimate of your services so the client is not left guessing. Know how long it takes to complete a job and how much it will cost. Make it clear to the client that there will be additional fees if tasks are added onto the original estimate before you start the job.

Did I miss anything? Oh yes, you will need talent.

Re: Things that say "I'm not really a professional

JajAjaj... Very good mate. Now, the wrong thing here is believing that you must have all those fancy accesories to be a professional, while being a professional means doing something by profession with certain skill level in the field, not having websites, phone contact information and siuch. Those things belongs to a fancy professional! I'm plenty of jobs and clinets and: 1) I have free accounts all over the Internet. 2) I haven't written my phone in the Internet, nor I don't think doing it. 3) I don't own a website. 4) I have just few examples to show to my clients, nd the examples where things I did for free... I'm a complete stupid!!! UNPROFESSIONAL!!! JAjaJAJjajJajajJAj!!! Well... no certaonly... I'm a professional without the silly looking! XD Anyway, clients love all those fireworks!

I agree with the under construction comment. Don't put it up if it's not ready. Broken links are very irritating and it just says that you don't care enough to make sure that your site works properly. The focus should be on your work. I agree that there is good flash and bad flash. I have seen some wonderful flash sites that are also easy to navigate and effective as long as the designer remembers that the purpose is to showcase the images and not their design. I'm not a fan of working with templates but there are some fabulous ones out there for purchase.

You must have confidence in your ability and tailor what you think/feel/say/do to your market customer. Be your self, even if it makes you more money and attracts more customers!

For services, I like to see a date less than 3 months old somewhere on the site. 'Last Updated' on the front page or something. Or even on a blog entry.
