Education requirements for a pro retoucher??

Does it just vary depending on the employer or is it pretty typical across the board to be expected to have at least an associates degree or graphic arts degree or is it enough to be self taught?

I'm just getting started and trying to figure everything out...any advice will be greatly appreciated...and if there's a certain section of the forum for the clueless please point the way...thank you.

most places only care about what you can do and how fast you can get it done, a piece of paper from an expensive school doesn't mean a thing if you are slow and can't do high-end work...

Yep, degrees don't mean much unless you can show your stuff to the max. Unless you plan to teach in a school somewhere, you don't need a degree to get into high-end pre-press. In fact, it would be better to find a mentor and hire them as a consultant to guide you along, practice your craft 8-12 hours a day, get an internship if possible at a leading art house.

There is an overwhelming amount of PS and pre-press tutorials online now where you can pretty much teach yourself the craft by focusing in and working at it.

Re: Education requirements for a pro retoucher??

Oh...that's lovely to hear!! Thanks...at this point all I know is that I have always loved photography and love playing with Photoshop and have an artistic detailed eye and a lot of free time and the passion to learn and if it just remains a hobby then that's fine but if it turns out I'm actually good enough at it to turn it into a career then that would be amazing and I'd really like to make that be the goal and do things right so that it's an option.

some nice poster on here recommended lynda.com and totaltraining.com can anyone give some feedback on that method for learning?

and yes...I am the queen of the run on sentence.

Why do you share a name with a famous porn star?

she can't be that famous, never heard of her

the training on lynda.com is a good starting point but there is no replacement for work experience, i would also suggest getting a copy of the photoshop bible...

Re: Education requirements for a pro retoucher??

I am just like Erin Avery, in that I too am new to this and would like to eventually make retouching a career. The feedback everyone gave her was very useful and informative for me as well. Thanks. I do have one question. Is working on your personal family photos a good way to start and hone my skills? I literally have hundreds of my family photos that have been passed to me. Some are in excellent condition and a lot need minimal to a lot of work to restore.

Photo-
That sounds like a good idea. I always found it difficult to just practice without it having any purpose. In my case, I bought a copy of the Photoshop Wow book and replicated the examples. Of course, there are plenty of free tutorials available now to do the same thing.
If you're going to be looking for work, concentrate on learning the path tool and making perfect masks.
