Adobe CS4 price policy-protest

Hello to all of you,

This is my first time posting here . While surching the web for international Adobe PS forums for a specific purpose,
namely protesting the Adobe price policy for Europe and and other regions to, I came to your forum.
Since the atmosphere is here very positive I will return with pleasure on other issues to.

For this time I´ll ask politely the ones who are concerned ,
to read my lines and determine by them self, if they want to support
a price policy beyond reason.

I have correctly upgraded my PS license since PS 6.
I also own a licensee for LR since version 1.0

Now Adobe announce new CS4.
And here the facts for up-graders in Europe:

The upgrade for PS CS4 for later versions
in US : $ 199,00 (€ 134, 34 - Curs: 23.09.08 )
in EC: € 248,00 before VTA !

That is € 114,00 ( $ 168,90 ) more than the US price !!!

This is not the defrence of the exchange rate.
Its a price for Creative Europeans !

I called Adobe Sales Support and asked why is the price difference this high,
They answered very friendly to me something in that way :

......" Sorry , thats the way it is. Look if you by a designer jean in NY
and the price is $ 50,00, the same pair of jeans will easy cost € 150,00 in Germany !"..................

So this is a kind of answer that reflects a certain spirit towards customers
of a serious professional software tool, doesn't it !?

Taking them by the word, I may regard the upgrade to CS4 a " software design gadget ",
pure luxury.

The Adobe price policy is a disadvantage to the creative in Europe and other regions.
And I will not support this attitude.

Finally it is not the tool that determines my creativity.
It is my creativity that makes a tool worth and valuable.

I remember a Interview with one of the Photoshop creators some years ago.
He clearly stated that, if you want a good result you have to determine and envision what the result
will look like and then Photoshop will help you to realize it.

So I should never come to the point when I have to believe, " hey, without that new tool
you cant be a creative anymore, you cant exist on the market ". Because its a lie.

For me it looks like that Adobe is testing how ready we are to pay "any price" for
their tools to become ours. Give them the right answer.

I will postpone any upgrade for at least 6 month and beyond, unless they change the price for the upgrade.

thank you for your valuable time reading this post,

good night / good morning,
were ever you are on this beautiful globe !

Ps: I have posted a similar post on an german apple user forum, and will do so on the international
Apple discussion site.

Re: Adobe CS4 price policy-protest

OK, so, I'll ask the question that you probably asked yourself some time ago. What's the alternative?
This is what happens when a software company (or any company) becomes a monopoly. It's why Bill Gates was the richest man in the world for a few years running. He was a monopolist, pure and simple.
That is one problem with the American near religion of "free" markets. The other is that nasty little thing going on with bad mortgage debt right now.

Re: Adobe CS4 price policy-protest

While it is hard to justify such a pricing policy, it is not hard to see their reasoning. However, Adobe's upgrade pricing has always been very fair and in certainly in line with other professional tools used in the photography/retouch business, i.e. software, cameras, lights, etc. So, I don't have a problem with paying for the tool. Would I pay the European price ?... It depends on whether it's relative cost is fair in comparison to other products priced for the European market.

Re: Adobe CS4 price policy-protest

Hi Benny,
For me the alternative is to manifest my point and my free will to not pay unjustified price.
One good client brings 100 new clients. And the other way round.

We are the Pros in advertisment and PR ! they know it and they watch and listen.
Healthy markets have to reflect reason. therefore my price policy toward my
clients must stay reasonable. So when less good times comes, I will still have clients.

Finaly it is us, who sell Photoshop as "the" tool to have. This upgrade price diference for Europeans and their cool attitude, I won´t sell.

all the best ;-)

Re: Adobe CS4 price policy-protest

Well, another thing. I don't know how it was in Europe, but for years and years I got Photoshop for free, much like many of the people I worked with. Easy, just dragged it to drive, bring it home, drag it to my drive. And Adobe knew this was going on, but was more than happy to get a super market share. Now that they own the world, it's payback time for them. Sorta fair, if you think about it.

Re: Adobe CS4 price policy-protest

Its a tool of trade for Pro's working full time so i guess at the end of the day if we want to produce great work, we need great software.

If we did not have Photoshop we would not be doing what we love each day at work.

Maybe for those of us in the UK and EU we need some buddy's in the USA who can ship our order's onto us.

Hi Tommy,
here to compare Apples Aperture latest update :
US : $ 99,00
EC : € 99,00 ( US $ 145,76 )
ok its a trick looks the same. but they take only the exchangerate.

When I talk about the PS CS4 upgrade, I talk about the download version.
No CD/DVD, no Handbook, no packing and no sending.

Re: Adobe CS4 price policy-protest

Yes Benny I agree. I also started wiht a "free" version. Once I made realy money with digital development I bought a licens. I make money with their tools so this people have to be payed. Adobe was very tolerant to the freelacer for years.
PS-CS4 is worth the money I have payed for it.
My critic is only directet in the unreasonable high price difrence between US and EU, and the slick answer of the sales support.

Re: Adobe CS4 price policy-protest

hey larry I agree with you... the difference for a download version makes no sense!

can you get a (proxy)mirror server in the US and download it from there?
