High End Retoucher Job Rates for NYC and LA

Hi Guys, this is a question for high-end retouchers working in the New York
City and Los Angeles markets. I am getting high-end to midrange
photographers and people in Marketing and Branding asking me how much I
charge. What is a fair price range to charge for retouching the following
types of images?

1. Celebrity Portraits (3 to 4 hours retouching)
For Example: Oprah Winfrey, U.S. Presidents, A-List Actors, B-List Actors, and Supper Models

2. Corporate Portraits of Women (2 to 2 1/2 hours retouching)
For Example: President or CEO of L’Oreal or Crayola Crayon Company,

3. Corporate Portraits of Men (1 to 2 hours retouching)
For Example: President or CEO of L’Oreal or Crayola Crayon Company

4. High-End Beauty for Advertising (5 to 12 hours retouching)
For Example: Revlon Cosmetics, Jones New York, and Fragrances for B List
Celebrities or Reality Show Personalities

5. Hair Color Boxes (3 to 4 hours retouching)
For Example: Revlon, Dark & Lovely, and Clairol

6. Magazine Covers (2 to 4 hours retouching)
For Example: Ladies' Home Journal, Shape Magazine, and Redbook

I thank everyone in advance who replies to my post.

Good luck. You''ll likely get 30 people giving you figures making sure you don't underquote them

With the exception of maybe item 1, all your hours are so far from reality that there is no answer for you.

Re: High End Retoucher Job Rates for NYC and LA

Hi, thanks for the reply.

Sorry, I should have written per-project. I was just listing the estimate time it would take me in Photoshop to retouch these types of images. Sorry again for not making that clear in my earlier post. Having said that, do you have any rate suggestions for the following types of images per-project?

1. Celebrity Portraits For Example: Oprah Winfrey, U.S. Presidents, A-List
Actors, B-List Actors, and Supper Models

2. Corporate Portraits of Women
For Example: President or CEO of L’Oreal or Crayola Crayon Company,

3. Corporate Portraits of Men

4. High-End Beauty for Advertising

5. Hair Color Boxes

6. Magazine Covers
For Example: Ladies' Home Journal, Shape Magazine, and Redbook

Thank you

Supper Models?? What's a Supper Model?

But, I digress. I only work on Reality Show personalities, and get paid very well.

You could charge whatever you like, as long as it makes sense to you and be able to pay your bills, it's hard to have a quote until you work with a photo to see how much work, and how many pictures to do. It's too fluid to give "a price". Don't quote too little, we are all squeeze to dirt low it's impossible to compete with retouchers in India or Central America or Southeast Asia when we live in the US the cost of living is still vastly different.

First I think is how good you are
2nd if your not sure about price you might ask, what there budget is so you can work out a fair price for them
this helps because
1)if its really low you can either refuse or try a work around
2)it will start to give you an idea what people are willing to pay for your skill
just my opinion

Hi Zganie, thanks for the suggestion! I appreciate you taking the time to answer my query.

From the total replies I have received, I am feeling confident with charging what I feel my time and expertise are worth.

Again, thanks to all that have replied.

Re: High End Retoucher Job Rates for NYC and LA

I'm assuming your thinking of a per image or project basis. I think some of your times are wrong like someone else said but I'll list how much i would charge per shot.

Typically for high fashion magazines i charge 150 an hour for other magazines between 50-100 an hour. For Advertising work between 200-300 an hour. Celeb work around 200 an hour. Agency work between 100 and 150 an hour. But i really just bill out depending on the final use. Ask questions lots of them before you agree to any set fees.

1. Celebrity Portraits (3 to 4 hours retouching)
For Example: Oprah Winfrey, U.S. Presidents, A-List Actors, B-List Actors, and Supper Models

Celebrity portriats generally take longer then most due to the mix of personalities and ego's you'll be dealing with. I would estimate 8 hours an image because there will be at least 6 rounds of changes you can count on that. I'd bid this out at 1500-2000 an image. Typically politicians are considerably less picky then celebs so i would pitch out at around 1200.

I think your hours are right for this i'd say 300 a shot.

4. High-End Beauty for Advertising (5 to 12 hours retouching)
For Example: Revlon Cosmetics, Jones New York, and Fragrances for B List
Celebrities or Reality Show Personalities

I'd say any cosmetic ad is going to go between 10-12 hours I also charge more for advertising work. So i'd say 3000 per image. B list celebs are much less work you will likely be dealing directly with the celeb you could bill this out like you would corporate portraits. Ask questions before you bid out any job and build padding into your estimate.

5. Hair Color Boxes (3 to 4 hours retouching)
For Example: Revlon, Dark & Lovely, and Clairol

Time sounds about right again advertising i'd say 1000-1200 a box.

6. Magazine Covers (2 to 4 hours retouching)
For Example: Ladies' Home Journal, Shape Magazine, and Redbook

Editorial budgets for these magazines are not the same as editorial budgets for one of your larger fashion magazines. I'd go to a much lower rate and i'd have to see the image but i'd probably only charge 75 to 100 an hour for this work.
