economy

it's been suggested to me that studios that get their primary income from magazine accounts (dennis, rodale, hearst) might see a slight drop but will be largely unaffected by the incoming "hard times," mostly because those magazines depend on circulation (not advertising dollars) to survive and after a brief initial scare everyone will realize that people are still buying magazines and everything will be ok

but it's also been suggested that studios dependent upon large advertising campaigns might get hit the worst. as the major corporations begin to "bunker up," advertising budgets could be the first thing to get consolidated or re-assessed. which is usually trouble, especially with the amount of money we charge these people

i was just wondering if anyone has felt a difference yet. my studio works primarily with high end advertising accounts, and we haven't felt anything yet, but just listening to the talk it seems like armageddon is right around the corner. maybe it's just too early to say...

Re: economy

Magazines are going the way of newspapers. This has been going on for some time, well before the present crisis. I remember reading over a year ago that Rodale was teetering. Pick up a Time Inc. magazine since 9/11 (!), and it feels like a comic book. No ads. Time Warner would probably love to sell that division, but I'm guessing nobody wants to pay their inflated selling price. Besides, most of that work is done in house.

Yes, ad work seems to be healthy right now, but '09 will probably be rough with new, leaner budgets. Be careful out there.

Re: economy

Oh, I'm definitely seeing a reduction in advertising and all commercial photographic retouching projects in my humble studio. We've been using cash reserves to keep the bills paid at times. That's first time in almost 4 years I've had to do this. It's forcing me to be more resourceful and flexible. There are opportunities for us. But we've got to dig deep for them.

Re: economy

I work with a publishing company that does mostly jewelry, they produce a magazine bimonthly and around this time they used to have catalogs to produce for holidays. This year, they have zero holiday catalog, which affect my income significantly as I do jewelry retouching. So if you guys have extra work to give me in jewelry retouching, please contact me. I posted links to see my work on the classified threads.

And, things get worse. Time Inc announces 600 job cuts, and Conde Nast announces cutbacks including less issues of Portfolio and Men's Vogue next year, with layoffs pending.

Re: economy

i've noticed fewer retouching jobs on indeed.com compared to last year..it also doesn't help with the wild speculation being written by the major news sources..if enough people keep hearing that a recession might be happening, people will panic and not spend which only compounds the problem...
