Unhappy Just got laid off.

I just got laid off from the day job (preflighting for a screenprint shop), & I am faced with being back into freelance full time. The jobs in the area are few & far between, except are lots of flash & web coding type jobs, but I have no flash/code skills at all. I graduated with my AA in Ad Design in 92' and never took flash or web classes.
I am trying to steer the freelance work into Photoshop Retouching, & Photoshop only specialist areas.
I have thousands of photo retouches under my belt & I do a lot of Photoshop work & I love the program's abilities.
Anybody got any advice/experience marketing for a Photoshop focused business?
Thank You

Re: Just got laid off.

sorry to hear about losing your job..i would suggest upgrading your skills so you can go after some of the production artist jobs, i see more of those jobs than strictly photoshop specialists...

Re: Just got laid off.

I was doing production for the screenprint shop.
Many of these type jobs they want you to do their web stuff as a freebie.
Production jobs in Phoenix are weak at the moment anyway.
I am 42 & don't know what the learning curve is on Java CSS, and all the Flash related code. I am super strong in Illustrator & Photoshop, & am hoping to use the skills I have.

Re: Just got laid off.

I know InDesign well, as I said most if not all the production art jobs also have little blurbs about CSS/ HTML/Actionscript & Flash. They have figured that as long as they have a designer they might as well have them do their web authoring as well for far less than they would be paid as a web coder.

Re: Just got laid off.

Mperkins-
Sorry about your layoff. You may want to consider taking a job outside of the industry, and then taking classes until things pick up. Take a look at your market area to determine what jobs may be needed a year or two from now, then try to train for them.
Don't get too locked into this business- you may find something you like better.
Good luck.

Re: Just got laid off.

Sorry to hear about your situation. I know how you feel about jobs that require expert knowledge in programs that are just too much to master in life time. I wonder how they define expert knowledge. It seems like knowing a specific skill is no longer enough these days. You'll have to be a jack of all trades and a master of all.

I might join you in 2 days. I just got a 48 hours notice of a lay-off meeting. I've already survived 3. My luck might have run out this time.

Keep your head up. Working part-time, maybe some freelance, and collecting unemployment is my plan. I'm very tired of searching for full-time gigs this past year.

Re: Just got laid off.

I don't see what Flash or web coding has to do with Photoshop retouching. Yes, some clueless employers and managers seem to think that they can get the entire package in one, low paying position, but I doubt that, and I'll bet the quality of work they get reflects that. I've yet to meet someone who is an expert in both Flash and Photoshop - there just isn't enough time in the day to be proficient in both on a high level. I always tell people that the major thing I learned in two Flash courses is that I'll hire someone to do it for me - I need 8 hours of sleep a day.

Tough luck, I have been through to many of these to count. I agree you may want to check out taking classes at a local Vo-Tech school for some skills that have nothing to do with re-touching. Sure learn InDesign at least, but maybe welding or some trade. Best of luck.

Re: Just got laid off.

Hi, I guess there couldn't be a harder time to get the pink slip and competition in the freelance industry is higher than ever. People have more time and the market has less money. So your tactics should adapt to the current situation. Stronger marketing, networking with the right sources of business. You might not get much positive response currently but it would payoff once marketing budgets are back to normal. Hope that helps
