Questions about building a portfolio

Hello everyone!

This is my first post so I'll introduce myself a little. My name is Amanda I recently graduated from film school in Chicago. Unfortunately during my senior year I had a change of heart and decided that the film industry wasn't for me. So back in May when I graduated I didn't feel excited to start my career because I didn't know what was going to happen or what I could do.

Before college I was a photographer. In high school I started taking courses and developed an eye for images. I've always loved photography and even though I didn't take any photography courses in college I was still taking pictures constantly. I taught myself how to use photoshop when I was 14 and I've been using it ever since. I've decided that I would like to pursue a career as a photo retoucher.

So that is where I am now. I've been doing some research on the industry, practicing my photoshop skills, and reading up on new ones.

I would like to find a job at a portrait studio or with a wedding photographer because I figured this would be a good entry level job where I could use the skills I have and expand them for possible jobs in the future.

So I'm wondering about building my portfolio (that I plan on making into a book and feature on my website).

-Around how many images should I have?
-Should they all be portraits or should I show off some other skills too?
-What size should the prints in my book be?

I would appreciate any help and advice and can't wait to hear from you!

Thanks for reading,
Amanda

Not less than 8, and not more than 20. Editing is your friend

-Should they all be portraits or should I show off some other skills too?

I'd say to edit your book depending on who you're showing it to. If you're showing it to portrait photographers, then make is 98% portrait retouching, and maybe a little splash of unrelated show-off material.

-What size should the prints in my book be?

I like 11x14 pages. Not so large as to be cumbersome, but big enough to show detailed skin work.
