Why hiring a Freelancer instead a Company?

Hi community. I have this question:

Why some people would pay a freelance guy when the cost is higher than in a company? You now a company always has bigger portfolios and it ¡s more 'serious' and cheap. Why someone would hire a freelancer?

Thanks in advance for the replies,

Mart

Re: Why hiring a Freelancer instead a Company?

In my experience it is just the opposite. Companies have a lot more to pay for to maintain their business and stay profitable. They also have higher labor costs due to benefits. Those companies also hire freelance workers when needed due to the size of a project or to provide a special need. Freelancers tend to make more than the employees of the company, but they do not get any benefits.

You may find a highly skilled freelancer charging higher for work than an agency, but if that is the case then they probably have a good and stable client list that they have built up over time that knows the value of the work that they are getting and a reputation in the industry that brings in work by referral.

Re: Why hiring a Freelancer instead a Company?

I find as with any Company or Freelancer, it remains the one on one who takes an interest in my request with results that will keep my business.

I have had enough of "look at my portfolio, academia or awards with zero results for what I am hiring them for.

Got it. So a freelance is like working in 'black', as it is called in my country. Meaning the freelancer doesn't get any benefit such a retirement, health care things, paid vacations and other stuff?

Freelancers are self employed, they have to provide those benefits for themselves. When you are setting your rate you need to take that into account, as well as the price of your equipment, software, rent, marketing expenses, "down time", accounting, etc. These are also things that a business would take into account to set their rate.

So, if the freelancer is also charging all that stuff, at the end, the costs involved when hiring a freelancer or a company are the same? What's the benefit of beging a freelancer or an agency worker beyond the typical comparissons?

Quantum3: You only pay the freelancer when you need him. An employee gets paid every single day.

Yes, the freelancer will (should!) make significantly more per hour he works, but throughout the year, if you do not have a need for a retoucher every day, the full day, you'll end up spending less money on retouching.

If you're still in the market for freelancers, check out this article: http://justinramedia.com/blog/2009/1...-project-work/

I've had a lot of clients hire me with little or no understanding of how the process works. I hope it helps!
