Re: What's a fair price for designing a wedding al

After making three wedding books, I totally understand why photographers charge so much...IT TAKES ALOT OF TIME. Think about it...you have to retouch the photos, think thought the layout...do the layout...proof...then place the order...and if you screw one little item you may have to do it all over again at your cost. Definitely record the time you spend on this album and when all is said and done you can figure out what you are making per hour. One last thing..1)make darn sure the customer proofs the book prior to ordering and 2) get at least 50% of what you are charging before you place the order...good luck...I'd like you to post some of your work once you have it.

Re: What's a fair price for designing a wedding al

I've been underselling myself it seems.

I work freelance occasionally for two different wedding photographers. For a 20-24 page (10-12 spreads - about 40-45 images) layout I charge $75 for simple layouts ($150 ish for 50 pages/25 spreads-about 80-90 images) - where it's just a background image at lower opacity with photos arranged over it with a couple creative effects and ideas.. For custom layouts including decorations, different textures and colors and/or some personalized theme - it can be $100-$125 (for the 20 page/10spreads) depending on the extended hours I put in for it.

Granted - I am working with local photographers who consistently give me work as well as they expect to keep their costs low in order to provide good products for their customers.

ALSO - I get sent different downloadable (for $$$) templates in which the photographers really like... This irks me.. As they expect me to re-create what someone else did. ALSO - It just shows that now-a-days anyone with a little knowledge of photoshop could simply purchase pre-designed templates and just re-arrange the elements and produce good layouts.

I would like to charge more but most likely will not unless my inbox starts filling up with more profitable work.. The problem is that our world is changing very fast. You no longer need specialists. Templates and online software to make creating these things with ease makes our skills less valuable every year. you can higher some teenager and download a template and have them assemble a half-way decent product for you at half the price..or less! -For example a local video/photo guy I know paid a bunch of money for a custom website... the kid he got designed a wordpress blog page and just customzied it and inputted all the info for him- He charged him something like 500-700 bucks... to essentially do something that anyone with a little computer knowledge could do and for a fraction of the cost it would be for a real web designer who spent years mastering javascript and css.
just a thought.

As skydog has suggested, a thorough breakdown of your cost of living and materials and of course time and expertise has to be done before you can come to a decision on pricing. It also has to respect market constraints and location as also suggested and fit within this band. If you're not sure get some quotes from competitors at least this will give you a clue what can be achieved by what budget.
