I have a retouching interview tomorrow - advice!

Hi guys,

I have my first retouching interview tomorrow and i really don't know what to expect! I understand there may be a test and lots of questions about the brand etc... but i really need to know more!

1. What type of retouching questions will i get?
2. What do i take to the interview?
3. How do i take my portfolio? - I was going to take a HD drive and my laptop but i am now panicking that they will need it printed.

Any help would be life saving and amazing! Thank you so much

I doubt you'll get many questions about retouching. More about your experience and approach. They might audition you, or that might come later.

Always take your portfolio with before/afters. As for the drive/laptop, take both. You have 30 seconds to make a first impression, I'd much rather be seen as grossly overprepared than underprepared.

The rules of interviewing are pretty much the same across the board. Be confident, look competent. Dress smartly, be prepared. If it is a basic interview where they are just trying to meet you and get a preliminary feel for what kind of person you are, it may be wise to have a printed portfolio you can leave with them. I'd imagine if they wanted to see what you could do they'd have the equipment on hand for you to work on. A printed portfolio also helps keep the conversation/interview moving along, instead of someone waiting for your laptop to boot up. If you have a tablet you can set up a slideshow on it. Just a few thoughts.

I think the tablet would be the way to go. I know a guy who actually mailed iPads (first version at that time, when it was a bit of a novelty) to prospective clients, which was VERY impressive. He trusted them to return them, which I think they did.

Best possible advice, .. don't bullshit. This in in complete contradiction to what you have been advised above.

Let's say, for the sake of argument, that you are someone with absolutely no practical experience and limited visual skills. This lack of any real experience (you've been using Photoshop for a year or so maybe) is less of a handicap than it may appear. You are much more likely to get a chance if you are honest than if you are not. Literally hundreds of people make this mistake. God knows why.

I'm not sure that anyone above was advocating what you suggest, unless posts have been removed? However it is of course sage advice indeed. Trading on skills you don't possess will come back to bite you in the end.
