Part of the talent a photographer should have is understanding what will be needed during postwork. Just like a motion picture director, the wise photographer will pre-plan a shoot with everyone who will be involved, including the retoucher. If this does not happen then it should impel the retoucher to discuss any concerns with the photographer to help prevent any issues in the future. If the photographer is wise, he/she will listen and apply changes where needed. If they ignore the suggestions they are idiots and deserve what they get - which may include a different retoucher.
