Ive had a go at a website aswell. Its a free one, courtesy of Google. Interested in feedback like you. Mainly shows my Technical illustration but theres a bit of Photo retouching aswell!

I must admit when I used the backgound image I thought it had a lot more impact than a blank background, but the draw back is, as you point out, that its a bit distracting. I might fade it a bit, by reducing the opacity, so its a bit more subtle!

A very good no-nonsense website Pari. I think it could be improved typographically by harmonising the font sizes and positions unless you were after an 'ironic' style.
Overall though, I do like it!

Pari: I'm in the midst of designing my site and I know what a pain making your own is. Nice job on the roll overs, needing to tackle that myself. The only thing on the site that bothered me was after clicking on an image in your portfolio page the image is opened in a new tab/window. Those new pages with the images do not have any navigation and to get back to the portfolio page or to view your contact page. I have to close that window which is kind of a pain. Maybe those pages don't have to open in a new window, and you can add links to the bottom to load your other pages? I'm in agreement on the font stuff. The text is pretty big and intrusive on the image pages. Easy enough to size those down. Oh, also, there are some alignment issues with the text/image on those portfolio pages as well. Is tough to design for every circumstance, but I would try looking at your site on some different browsers and different screen resolutions. Things can move around quiet a bit if you're not careful. Excellent start and I think with a few tweaks you'll be golden!
