How do we get so attached to possessions? When you see them like this it makes you think. I enjoy your work tremendously, Sam.

Sam, I like the photo, but I have to ask where you took this? Some of the items in the photo (passport, negatives, photo album) are hardly things that someone would carelessly throw away. Makes me think that either you arranged the items - or something bad happened to cause this arrangement of "possessions." What is the story behind this photo?

I think we might be seeing the results of looting ladies.

Yes, Jeanie, the items are arranged like that on purpose - the photo was taken in the bush just near my house.
Last year, some friends and others had their farms and houses trashed, looted and burned by "war vets" and they lost everything. It was completely devastating for them and so by doing this piece (which was for an art exam) I was trying to relate to what they had gone through and what might also happen to us.

Just getting back to this thread...
It's a VERY powerful photo Sam - I think it expresses everything you set out to express - and more. How are your friends doing now?
I assume you got an "A" for your art exam?

Thanks, Jeanie.
It's amazing how people can pick up their lives and carry on "as normal" (though how can it be "normal"?) and that's what those guys who got trashed last year have done. So admirable. Don't know if I'd have that sort of strength.
The pic never actually made it to the exam, sadly!
DJ - funny you should mention my eye for rubbish ... I've always had a strange fascination for trash!! African rubbish-heaps are no fun, though - all the interesting stuff has been removed. But nothing beats a "skip" in a British city. Veritable treasure-troves, they are!

Sam, I really like this pic. At first glance, it's so... Africa. On second glance however, I see so much more of what we're all into, restoring that which has been thrown away...

Hmm - good point, Al. I'd never thought of it like that.
