This is a Dutch Church document that was used for an old Retouching Challenge (#4). The retouching steps I took were:

Duplicated the background and set the duplicated layer to multiply. Created a new layer and applied a merge visible layers.

Selected all the printed text and designs to separate layers. Selection was done by an intial rough selection followed by a select similar.

Duplicated the background 3 more times and set each duplicated layer to multiply in order to bring out the detail of the hand writing. Added a levels layer where I set the black eyedropper to the color of the hand written text. Created a new layer with all previous layers merged (merge visible).

Ran several Select/Color Range" layers to isolate the hand written text. Merged layers and cleaned up the selection so that only the hand writing was left. Selected the background, inversed the selection to get just the hand written text, and put this on a separate layer.

Created a new background by using a deeper color than the original background, and adding a small amount of noise to give a paper texture.

Moved the layer containing hand written text above the new background layer, and duplicated the layer to strengthen text, sharpened slightly with unsharp mask, and changed it's blending mode to multiply.

Moved the layer containing the printed and text designs above the new background layer, duplicated the layer to strengthen the printed text and designs, sharpened slightly with unsharp mask and changed it's blending mode to multiply.

Did some fine-tuning over entire document, and added a hue/saturation layer boosting the saturation.

Thank You Vikki:

I find these documents with faded writing a challenge to work on.

hi alan,
i was really amazed I have worked in the past with similar challenges.
I'm trying some other method. I will post if results are good enough.

So far you have some great projects going.
