Here is a black and white line drawing and it's colorized version. Again, this is using the copy background>change copy to multiply (blend mode) trick.
Then, each element is painstakingly selected with my best friend (the polygon lasso!) by clicking in the center of the black lines of a desired section (like an arm) and then holding the Cntrl key and tapping "J" while ON the Background layer and, pixels locked, I paint the new layer raised from the background, be it wings (I used layer styles)
or arm or hair. After finishing the the target layer, unlock pixels and over-spray to blend the layer in with the rest of the pic.
