RetouchPRO LIVE "Black & White Tonal Control" with Chris Alvanas

This is an unedited HD 1080p recording of our September 24, 2011 live show. The show is over 2 hours long, and you can pause, rewind, and watch as many times as you like over the 3-day rental period.

This show was originally titled "B&W HDR: Beyond Tone Mapping", but the new title is much more accurate. It was intended as a followup to Chris's "Painterly HDR" show, but just as that one was only about HDR for the first half, this one is only about HDR for 20 minutes or so. The remainder of the show is Chris showing his black & white tonal control workflow which is applicable to any images, HDR or regular.

Chris's technique allows for an incredibly granular approach to black & white conversion, yet is simple enough that it can be started with an action (in fact, Chris recommends that, though you'll need to record your own).

From smooth glowing highlights to inky stylized shadows or anything inbetween, Chris will get you excited about shooting for black & white.

Chris Alvanas is a retoucher, photographer, fine artist, author, and educator. He has a wide spectrum of work to share with us, but for his first live show I asked him to perform one of his uniquely stylized HDR images as we watched and asked questions.

In case you're not familiar with HDR (High Dynamic Range) images, they're made from multiple images, identical except for their exposure. This allows access to a range of tones far outside the capability of a single shot. Chris shares his technique for combining these images into one, but goes beyond that to show how he uses further techniques to realize his unique vision.

Besides his excellent HDR workflow, Chris also shares many of his local adjustment tips for Photoshop. Many in the audience were wowed by these tips and felt they would have been worth the ticket price on their own.
