RetouchPRO LIVE with Scott Valentine
"Blend Modes" - 01/08/11

Scott Valentine the co-author of Real World Compositing with Photoshop CS4 and an award-winning experimental photographer and long-time Photoshop user in both artistic and technical capacities. He contributes considerable time to the Photoshop and digital photography communities at and one of the longest-standing Photoshop web communities, Scott has a deep understanding of digital imaging and optical physics, and served as a subject matter expert in microphotography and technical image analysis at a national laboratory. As a member of Photoshop's prerelease teams, Scott has access to all the latest features and thinking from Adobe on "what's next." Currently, Scott is doing his best to bring 3D in Photoshop to the photographic and design communities, showing how these new tools can become essential elements in the creative toolbox.
Scott's bio leaves off that he's a physicist working at Los Alamos. Join Scott as he uses his science background to desconstruct how Photoshop blend modes affect layers and painting.
From Scott:
"During the show, I’ll discuss a little of the math behind some of the different modes, but the focus will be on understanding how they can be used in practical, sometimes surprising, techniques. What I’ll really try to drill home is the methodology I use when approaching imaging challenges and experimentation. As a little teaser, did you know you can use blend modes to develop complex masks? How about increasing apparent sharpness and detail nondestructively? I’ll share as much of my secrets to reverse engineering and experimenting with blend modes as time allows."
You will view Scott's full-sized desktop live via your web browser as he explores what Photoshop blend modes actually do, and provides some interesting and unexpected uses for them. Scott will explain what he's doing along the way, with me (Doug Nelson) along to forward audience questions.

After Scott is finished with his presentation, he will answer more general questions on a time available basis.

User comments about RetouchPRO LIVE:
"It really felt like a private 2-hour class where you get to ask specific questions which you wouldn't get a chance to otherwise."
"The quality of streaming was great, no problems at all, and I could see a difference in colour when adjusted by 1%."
"This was without a doubt a stroke of genius to plan, put together, and execute a class like this. It is nearly perfect for those of us who have a tough time physically as well as financially traveling to other locations for classes."
" thing for Photoshop and fotogs on the web. Period."
