  • FTP/file sharing recommendations/advice

    Hi everyone!

I've just joined here. I am a retoucher with 3 years assisting experience and now starting to branch out on my own.

I was just wondering about file sharing services

    - What do you use/is the most professional system
    - Can you recommend any particular company?

I'm looking for something I can upload work to, that clients will have private access too. It'd be nice if it were aesthetically pleasing too.

I've seen a few customisable FTP sites around eg Brick. Has anyone used these? Is there anything better?

    Many Thanks,

    Hannah

Dropbox. It's not the fanciest, but it has a professional reputation (ie: not known for hosting iffy stuff). And most industry people already use it.

I agree with Doug, if your client does not have their own FTP, then dropbox doesn't have a lot of features but it has been working well for me. You just have to be super organize if you have a large volume of images. Some of my clients will send me images though Hightail or Yousendit, etc.

        Good luck!

Google Drive allows for huge files to be shared with fast and simple downloads. And though I haven't tried it yet, I understand Microsoft is offering unlimited storage with an Office 365 subscription.

Bear in mind Dropbox is certainly is not the fastest. It works well because of covering almost every platform and having a decent web interface, but huge files take time to upload / sync.

                Advice please - ftp options
                by Damo77
                Hi everyone,

I'm considering setting myself up a little business providing image retouching for publishers and designers. (I'd love to be self-employed, but gee it's hard to take that leap - especially with a family and a mortgage!)

Anyway, obviously I'd need a way for...

                File Transfer Program?
                by Vasquez
                Hello,

I'm looking for a file transfer program on a large server.
That makes it possible to download/upload all over the world from-and to companies, without complications.

                Do you know?

I am a retoucher who would like to offer his clients the facility to access their retouched files via ftp. FTP (File Transfer Protocol)
                by Doug Nelson
Ok, it's been pointed out to me several times recently that not everyone knows how to FTP files. This is a very important task that anyone working with large files should know, so I've started this thread to make sure everyone does know.
