  • Movies of redemption

I'm in the mood for a good redemption movie, Shawshank or otherwise. You know, where someone does something bad, then more than makes up for it? Or something bad happens to someone, then they turn it around and it all works out great?

Some good ones that come to mind:
The African Queen (actually the movie that started me thinking about this)
    About a Boy
    Pursuit of Happyness
    Guinevere

What are your redemption movie recommendations?

Silent Hill is the only one that comes to mind right now.

I'm trying to think of some kung fu movies about redemption, but these are usually more about revenge. Although, Shadow in Eagle's Claw might count because Jackie takes more than a few beatings in it.

Revenge is just about the opposite of redemption. Redemption requires self-sacrifice.

Good Will Hunting and the Legend of Bagger Vance are great redemption movies. Apocalypse Now and the Thin Red Line are up there too. The Shawshank Redemption is a bit of a stretch in regards to character redemption. You, Me, and Dupree also has a good coming-of-age/redemption plotline. There are many more.

The Legend of Bagger Vance is actually a modern retelling of the Bhagavad Gita, so it might possibly be one of the ultimate tales of redemption

the last samurai is a great redemption movie.

and was it 'the last green mile' or was it just 'the green mile'? i forget, but that was, with a bit of a twist to it, a redemption movie, i'd say. also a very good movie.

                    Re: Movies of redemption

(this thread showed up as #1 in a Google search for "movies about redemption" )

Perhaps my favorite redemption movie is "Hero" (1992), with Dustin Hoffman leading a -great- cast. "Groundhog Day" (1993) is another personal favorite redemption movie.
A newer one that's also very good is "Ghost Town" (2008) with Ricky Gervais.

I don't know how I could have left off one of my favorite movies ever, As Good As It Gets.

One my newest favorites is about the opposite of redemption, Synecdoche, New York.

OK, we have a thread for books, a thread for music, an entire forum for cooking, it's about time we had a thread for my favorite subject: movies.

I'm a total moviephile. I have every movie channel our cable system offers, and netflix.com's biggest subscription package. And I wish I had...

                          Scariest Movie Scene
                          by Doug Nelson
I'll say the scene with the nurse in Exorcist 3 (if you've seen it, you know which scene I'm talking about ). I've seen that movie a dozen times, and that scene still scares me every time. Great movie, in general, brilliant writing.

No one took my hint, so I'll start this thread myself.

Guilty pleasures...movies you're kind of embarrassed to admit you enjoy.

                          For me these would enclude:

                          Roger Moore James Bond movies

                          Pauly Shore movies

forgive me, doug. i know you have a bad movie thread and some others, but i couldnt really find one that fit this category. these are movies that are so bad, bad acting, bad writing, bad directing, possibly, but not necessarily low budget. these movies are so bad that they're fun to watch.
