I'm looking at this and the problem isn't that you're stuck on how to achieve specific details. The problem is that neither edit says anything about what you hoped to achieve. Personally I tend to like dimples and think it looks weird when people remove them, but that's my own personal taste. There's no real improvement to the flow of the lighting or the important aspects of the photo. It's just open, apply curves, remove dimple. That doesn't tell me anything about what you hoped to accomplish.
