Sounds like you're working in grayscale mode.

        Image>Mode>RGB

Your image mode is displayed on the title bar of your working image window.

As for how you got into GS mode, I don't know exactly. Perhaps your last image was in GS, or you performed a function that converts to GS.

Adding color accents to a grayscale image
          by razor_to_rosary
Hey, I am using Photoshop 8 and cannot find anywhere how to add color accents (like eyes, piece of clothing, etc) to a grey/black and white image. If anyone could help me, I would be so grateful!!

Help converting black/white image to color
          by duwayne
I've learned a lot at RP including about 7 ways to convert color images to black and white. The challenge I have now is to find ONE way to convert a 256-grayscale image into a 256-color image. Could be RGB or Indexed (or anything else for that matter). I use Photoshop CS on a Windows platform. Any...

Question on Photoshop Work Area Background
          by Kim
I've been trying to figure out how to change the dull background of the Photoshop Work Area. Currently it's plain gray (only turn black when I switch it to Full Screen Mode).

Is it possible to change this background without changing the screen mode to full ?

          Thanks

          LAB versus HSL
          by bart_hickman
I see a lot of folks convert to the LAB color space (and back again) and you most often say you're doing it so you can edit luminance and color informaton separately.
