  • Remove the stains on ny roof! Help!

I need to remove the stains from this roof. It should be one light gray tone. I am lost. Please help.
    Thanks,
    Christine

What software will you use to attempt this?
How much photo editing experience do you have?

The roof is yellow looking in part due to direct sunlight where the other grey areas are in shade so do you just want to change the colour and also lighten the stain areas?

One way in Photoshop would be to just add a new layer set mode to colour and sample an area of grey roof elsewhere and paint over the sunlit part to reduce the yellow.

If you want to lighten/blend the darker stain area then you could try the dodge and burn tools.
Click on the image below and wait a few seconds for it to change from your original to a modified version using the techniques above. Note that this is just a rough to give you an idea

No, gutters or roofs really I cannot stand heights . Doing bathroom refit at the moment - needs to be finished before Christmas or SWMBO told me no pressies!

Wow. That looks great. I have photoshop cs5. I am fairly skilled with certain things. (not roofs

I prefer not to use dodge, because it tends to look patchy.

I will try your other suggestion.

          Thanks so much.

Ok. Color layer worked great to remove the overall discoloration. Thanks, I've not used it before. But the dodge tool is removing the shingle texture as well as the stain. It also looks a little splotchy. In there another way?

It sounds like you have the dodge effect set too high. There does appear to be detail in the roof so you need to be gentle in the amount of dodging.
Duplicate your image first then try setting Dodge to Midtones, and Exposure = 5 - 8% then paint over slowly.

Another way that gives a similar effect and many prefer is:
Add a new Layer and fill with 50% grey set layer mode to Overlay. Then using the paintbrush set to white paint on the new layer with white to dodge and black to burn. Once again make sure you set the brush to low opacity and keep working over the area until you achieve the look you need. If you make a mistake just change the brush colour to black and paint over.

Patch tool works well in times like this. Just be sure to feather the edge a bit.

assuming you have a higher resolution image to work on, if you get your radius just right, you could do a frequency separation (possibly asymmetric) to separate the shingle texture from their colour. Then working on the low frequency layer, patch, clone, heal, paint, smudge to even out the tones, then the solid colour layer, blending set to colour as described above.

                  Hope it helps.
