  • Help with interior shots?

My company hired a photographer "friend" to shoot our office space for our website and to save money they want me to do all the retouching. Luckily he shot RAW but I'm pretty lost on how I could save these images and make them pop.

He shot plates, but only used ambient light and, in my opinion, they leave a lot to be desired. I tried using LR Enfuse but what I'm left with is fairly flat and underwhelming and unfortunately retouching these kinds of shots isn't one of my photoshop strengths. I don't want to use photomatix, but sadly that overdone HDR look is considered "cool and edgy" around here.

Looking at what I have to work with, does anyone have some tips on how I might be able to salvage these shots. I've also attached a link to a zipped file of the 3 RAWs if anyone is feeling adventurous.

Hi.... I did some work on your raw files mostly in Camera Raw.

Wow, that's impressive Wolfman- really like the tone and it definitely pops much more than I was able to accomplish in LR and LREnfuse.

Were you compositing the 3 different files or just picked one and ran with it in RAW? Did you have to lots of localized adjustments or is this mostly global shifts? Any plug-ins or just using ACR?

I think I'd feel much better about the shots if I was able to mimic your technique– any insights you could share (or even a layered .PSD I could dissect?)

I would not use Photomatix on this image set. However it is a high contrast scene for which HDR is best suited to address. For real estate and architecture, HDR programs such as Olone's PhotoEngine or SNS-HDR Pro are much better suited.
The attachment below was done with PhotoEngine. I did not adjust the white balance because the photographer may have wanted to retain the warmth of the tungsten lights. However all HDR apps contain sliders that will shift the tone from warm yellow to cool blue as well as tint the image toward green or magenta.
The results will be much better if performed on RAW source files rather than the jpg files which have some of the data clipped and not recoverable.

Pretty nice conversion Wolfman. Great improvement over RAW files!

Setcamper... only you know the amount of color (natural or warm glow) you want to adjust or correct. You know the room. I also adjusted most in RAW. I opened your small sample from Bridge in RAW format, pushed the Fill Light and also added Restore, I used the Gray Balance eye drop on the wall to filter out some of the warm glow. These tools will also depend on which version of a CameraRAW plugin you are using. I then isolated the wall (with painting) and the Zebra Rug separately and destaurated quite a bit. Again, you will know what color your Leather is. I left it a little darker, black -bluish (from outside blue light). I think no matter how you go at it - you will have to do some localized adjusting.

Thanks all. Something I'm curious about, for everyone who took a stab at retouching my provided images, are you able to just using just one RAW conversion from only one file, multiple RAW conversations from a single file, or are you using one raw conversation for each file and then compositing.

Also, I'm stuck in ACR 6.7 because we haven't upgraded to CS6- so I'm stuck using 2010 processing.

These are good questions, so here are my comments.
If you examine this set you will see that IMG1866 actually captures the entire range of the scene. If you open it in ACR, you will find that the shadows have lots of detail and are not clipped. The highlights, specifically above the horse painting are just over the edge but a slight adjustment of the highlight slider can pull them within range so that they are not blown. From there adjustments can be made to contrast and color to produce an acceptable image. So the 1st answer is that this scene can be processed from a single RAW file without having to resort to a merge in HDR s/w.
That being stated, I must say that ACR is not the best RAW converter. There are many others that do a much better job. One of my favorites is a newly released product called Photo Ninja by Picturecode. Below is a result of my running Photo Ninja on IMG1866. This time I shifted the white balance more toward daylight but can shift the temperature warmer or cooler to taste.

This image would have been a great candidate for HDR processing if there had been one or more under exposures to avoid the highlights being mostly blown in the set of source files. I notice the ev steps were only 1/3 stop. I never recommend less than 1 ev stops and if possible to try and capture 5 shots (-2ev to +2ev).
                  Cheers, Murray

Murray gave you a great detailed answer. Part of what I was going to also say. I also used 1866 because of the same reasons Murray gave (carried the full tonal range). I really don't mind 2010 processing (that is what I used). I have both - and sometimes find 2010 easier to use. But in any case, I think if you play around with ACR with the 1866 image, you will can get a pretty decent starting point.

I did a lot of white balance in acr globally and localized with the adjustment brush including bringing down the over blown area above the painting with the gradient tool.

I also combined the 3 exposures into Merge To HDR Pro in the Bridge to make a 32 bit tiff which I put back into acr to do more fine tuning.

Considering I have never used a camera that isnt wrapped in plastic and doesnt end up in the trash I was wondering if I could use 3 or 4 raw files that someone has taken with the different exposures so I can play with hdr and toning if not no biggie but figured I would ask.

I have begun shooting commercial building interiors which, depending on the time of day have fairly high contrast ratios with the exterior windows and the interior lights vis-a-vis ambient...
