If any of you are considering a new scanner, I'll pass this along: I bought the Acer 1240UT. The great thing about it is it's ability to scan prints to 11X14, and slides/negs up to 5X7. I had a couple of B&W films that gave me trouble. One was Kodak (I think Plus-X), in 645 format, and the other had no markings on it, but was 50 - 60 years old. These two films scanned so contrasty, that they were unusable. Many attempts to get a decent scan did not help. Acer Tech Support told me they were probably incompatible with the scanner/software (not a very good answer). After downloading Viewscan, my first attempts to scan the same films produced great results.

Hello Kathleen,
ViewScan is a scanner software, and it is compatible with quite a few scanners. I think it's a steal for $40.00. I believe initially, it was used for film scanners, but now it supports several flatbed scanners as well. Here is a link if you want more info.
