How to adjust printer or Photoshop to print 8.5X11

I have an Epson R800 and is using Photoshop CS2. I'm trying to increase a 5X7 photo to an 8.5X11. The problem that I'm having is that the top and bottom part of the photo keeps getting cut off. When I tried to print, I receive a warning that the image is too large for the paper and if I proceed, part of the picture will be cut off. The resolution I'm using is 460. The width is okay. What is the best way to increase a smaller size photo to a larger size. I had called Epson this morning and they said that the problem is in Photoshop. I'm also printing with Epson Film Factory. Can someone please tell me how to remedy this problem.

Hi, I am new to photoshop, and the group, but let me see if I can be of help. Did you change your setting for portrait or landscape? If you are trying to print a landscape picture on a portrait setting, your picture will be clipped. I am not sure this is what you are doing. Hope this helps

The problem isn't with photoshop. It's actually a printer setting. You would have to set up your printer to print 8.5x11 borderless. Of course this depends on whether your printer can print borderless or not. If it can it can probably only do so with certain types of paper. You should consult your printer manual to find out. If it can't print borderless it will always have a margin where it will not print. What you can do is print up to the margin and measure it. Then make a template in Photoshop that takes into account these margins. That should solve your clipping problem.

Im thinking that the aspect ratio of a 5x7 and an 8.5x11 are different. I would usually go back to the original image and re-crop it in photoshop. I would set the crop options to be 300-400dpi and then put in the 8.5x11 dimensions for the crop size.

I think that you would normally loose some part of the picture in re-converting from 5x7 to 8.5x11. At least if you crop it is PS - then you can CHOOSE what gets kept or lost before hand - rather than being unpleasantly surprised.

I would also choose the "fit image" check box on the print driver - so that the image takes up most of the paper.

The R800 is a nice printer - and I believe it can print borderless with epson glossy paper.

Ray is correct, the aspect ratio of a 5x7 print will not scale to exactly 8.5x11. if you set the short side to 8.5 you'll end up with a long side of 11.892 and so lose some from the top and the bottom. If you set the long side to 11 the short side will be 7.862, so you'll end up with white borders down the sides of the picture.

If you uncheck the constrain proportions box in the image size dialog, to 'force' the image to fit, the image will become 'shorter and squatter', destroying the correct aspect ratio. So don't be tempted to do this.

So like Ray said, you will need to use the crop tool to set the correct proportions for your image and crop off some parts that simply won't fit on your chosen print size. Remember to enter '8.5 in' and '11.5 in' in the boxes so that it knows you mean inches. You could type in the resolution if you wish to alter the resolution here, but it will affect image quality. Because you have an Epson printer, if you do want to put in a figure, then it should be 360 which is likely to suit your printer.

If the image is a landscape, you will need to either rotate it 90 degrees before printing (What I do) or choose landscape orientation from the printer dialog when you print.

When you print, remember to use the properties button from the print dialog box to set your printer up to print borderless, or else you will get white borders all round your print.

How to adjust printer or Photoshop to print 8.5X11

I went into the Epson printer properties and click on borderless, however, a message came up that stated: Print quality in the top and bottom areas may decline or the area may be smeared depending on the media. For details about this setting see online help or your reference guide. I also noticed that where I had type in 8.5X11 for the paper size, A4(210X297mm) replaces the 8.5X11. The media type I'm using is Premium Glossy Photo Paper by Epson. I went to the crop tool and type in 8.5 X 11 and a resolution of 360, however, it only crop below her waist.
The photo is portrait because it was taken vertically. I had set portrait on the printer. The original photo was a 4X6.

Whenever I change one setting, the other change also. For example, if I change the 8.7 to 8.5 the the height changes too, and vice versa.
