Painting with Textures

The 'thunk' you just heard was the sound of my jaw hitting the floor. This is a facinating technique. REALLY appreciate you taking the time to provide details and posting the example image.

Questions:

1. To restate the general method (for my own understanding)you're using a textured brush (in this case, one with 'canvas'-like characteristics) to paint some texture on layer 3 and, using the same texture brush, erase part of layer 2 toward the edges to reveal texture (of a slightly different color) from the background layer. Is that correct?

2. How did you choose the color(s) you used for the texture on layer 3?

3. Is the pattern brush used one of the standard PS7 brushes or something downloaded or custom created?

4. For the benefit of those new to this forum, layer 2 (in your example) was an image you previously manipulated... not a "photo-like" image, right?

If you have the time and inclination, you might want to talk about THAT thought process and method (in a separate thread ). That in and of itself is pretty impressive too!

No. Brush work was simply a soft-edged round brush. HOWEVER - what I was painting on layer 3 in multiply mode was from the pattern tool with the canvas pattern selected. This pattern should be the same pattern you have selected for your background...

I didn't. The pattern tool simply paints whatever pattern you have selected...

3. Is the pattern brush used one of the standard PS7 brushes or something downloaded or custom created?

It's not a pattern brush but the "Pattern Stamp Tool". This is the tool which shares space with the "Rubber Stamp Tool".

True - I should probably have used a more pedestrian example...

Are you talking about the drawing? If so, I can outline that process but I'm pretty much a hack in that department. Basically, I just took a picture of my wife and put a transparent layer over it and outlined her, then added the color on a 3rd transparent layer. My problem is that I'm not much of a sketch artist and I'm struggling with creating shadows with line-drawing...

Holy Cow! I LIKE this method.

Believe it or not today was the first time I've ever used the Stamp tool to apply a pattern loaded via EDIT > Define Pattern. What a concept waiting to be tapped.

BTW: I used PS 5.5 for this rendition, so I didn't have all the PS7 bells / whistles available to me.

Here's our little Hope (Lynda Logan's granddaughter)... CLICK HERE to jump to the thread where the original can be seen/downloaded.

HOPE
To get the Hope sketch effect:
* Duplicated the Background layer
* Turned Background visiblity off
* Embossed duplicate of the Background layer
* Desaturated embossed layer
* Invert embossed layer (it looked better this way)
* Smart Blur (normal) to smooth out some noise
* Applied a grouped Levels adjustment layer to squeeze out some more noise on the embossed layer

TEXTURE (top) LAYER
Opened a "linen" texture from my texture collection, from which I defined the pattern. Applied this texture on a top layer per Jack's method.

TEXTURE BG LAYER
Created a new layer above the original background and below the embossed layer. Filled it with dark brown color, applied Texturized filter (canvas) and cranked up the effect with several applications of Unsharp mask.

Emboss layer: Defined a layer mask and, with airbrush tool selected and wide, soft brush, painted with black on the layer mask to reveal just a little bit of the dark brown, canvas-textured layer below. (After I cropped the image, these last steps aren't that apparent.)

FRAME (inside)
Framed with the action that can be downloaded from HERE].

Finished with a 3 pixel outside stroke.

On this one, when I erased to the texture on step 4, I created a brush from a small selection of the canvas pattern at the beginning and erased over the image at 10% opacity

Spent yesterday using Painter's for the first time.... did my first clone and tried out each brush. Working in version 1.01 Classic Painter but the price was right....free. Found these links that are going to help me:
