E - (Darken) Copy of Background + Photoshop Find Edges [Layer Mask]
D - Copy of Background + Photoshop Dry Brush [Hide All Layer Mask]
C - Copy of Background + Impressionist > Charcoal > Default [Hide All Layer Mask]
B - Copy of Background + Impressionist > Chalk > Detail Opaque Strokes [Hide All Layer Mask]
    A - Copy of Background + Impressionist > Marker > Opaque Strokes

Layers B-D were added one at a time. With each layer, detail was applied by airbrushing white on the Hide All layer mask.

On the top layer, black was airbrushed on the layer mask in areas where the line detail was too much, especially on the ground around the pitcher's mound.

If you don't have the Impressionist plugin, try this instead for the layer below the Find Edges layer:
    * Duplicate Background
    * To the duplicate apply Photoshop's Pixelate > Crystalize filter (I used 21 for a setting)
    * Then to the same layer some Brush Strokes > Spatter (9,5)
    * Followed by a little Distort > Ocean Ripple (9,9)

Hope this gives you some ideas.

This started out in one direction which I eventually abandoned. That happens sometimes.

So, off in another direction I went and here's what evolved.

Hopefully the snapshot of the Layers Palette will give you enough information on the "how to."

        Strike One...

        I tried this...
        • Duplicated background.
        • Extracted pitcher onto new layer.
        • Applied Blur/Radial Blur/Zoom (30) to background copy layer.
        • Applied Palette Knife/Watercolour action to pitcher (DannyR DPR ver 07A).
        • Used layer mask to feather the edges of the pitcher imade to blend it into the background copy layer.
        • Flattened and saved.
