      Thought a new bg might brighten things up. These kids don't look too happy. Probably would rather be running through the woods in jeans.

        Cute caption, Craig, but as one with a daughter not much older than our co-subject, I'm already nervous about "all the little sailors" in the neighborhood!

        Steve... The BG replacement is a definite improvement. Wish I'd used yours.

        - - - - - -

        Mine:
        * Started by applying Levels to the background to bring out the foilage
        * Merged the Levels adjustment onto a new layer and named it "Base."
        * Duplicated Base.
        * Applied Paint Engine's Arctic setting (www.FantasticMachines.com)
        * Duplicated Base again and dragged above Arctic layer.
        * Applied KPT Pyramid Painter (note: Photoshop Dry Brush or Xero Carrivagio would work about as well) to simplify the image a bit
        * Added a hide all layer mask and painted with white to reveal detail where needed
        * Duplicated image, flattened and saved.
        * Opened in Painter and applied "Just add water" and "Grainy blender" strokes
        * Saved and closed
        * Opened in Photoshop again
        * Sharpened a bit
        * Applied Hue/Saturation adjustment (boost saturation) and fine tuned colors using Selective Color
        * Added edge frame

            Your kind words are greatly appreciated.

            Now, if I could only get my wife to say the same thing! (I'm afraid no Painter or PS tutorial to the rescue in that regard! )

              Thanks Danny...much appreciated.

              Here's another try using everything in the original. But they still don't look happy. 8-)

                Craig, Steve and Danny - well done! In the larger resolution photo the little lass isn't sad at all, there's a hint of a smile there...!
                The little lad looks a bit nonplussed however!?

                  hehe, danny. yes, but that's what little girls are for, to drive daddys crazy with worry

                  and i like your rendition, btw. very subtle.

                    Thank you...and as for the unhappy part, well I'll concede nonplussed, and maybe uncomfortable. 8-)

                      I tried to do this in painter but the pixels i thought was too small for a proper painting.

                        In spite of the size limitation, it turned out very nice!

                            Danny and Legacy~art: I love the painterly effect and mood that you achieved. Very nice.
