  • Need help with a crumpled picture

    Hello,

i have a very old picture of my mum, but it is very crumpled. I tested a lot of things, but I'm incompetent to remove the breaks.
Can anybody help me with this problem?

    Thanks a lot.

    Best regards, Mondfee.

I'm assuming that you scanned the picture? First thing I would do is go back and rescan it with "descreen" turned on in your scan software. This should help remove the paper texture.

I'm not really sure, if it's correctly now. I didn't find a option called descreen in my software.

Sometimes you have to click around to find it. I know with my Epson software it isn't always there it hides under the "unsharp mask" check box and sometimes I have to click that on and off several times to get descreen to come up.

Re: Need help with a crumpled picture

I spent a little time on this, but was unable to completely do the whole photo. There is a texture in the paper so I ran it through an FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) filter. It did reduce the texture a little.

Mostly cloning and healing brush. A little contrast adjustment--it may not be right and then a third party airbrush filter. If no one submits a finished copy I will try to complete this later today.

Re: Need help with a crumpled picture

You can do amazing things by scanning the image upright, then turning it 90 degrees and scanning again and then combining the two images.

When the scanner light passes over the cracks, it creates shadows and that's why the cracks show up so much. By turning the picture and then scanning again, the "shadows" appear differently and when you combine the images, they cancel each other out.

It's easier to do than it is to explain LOL

              Take care, Margaret

It looks like a painting, but it's very nice. Thank you very much.

Re: Need help with a crumpled picture

I ran this through my FFT filter, and it did a pretty good job of cleaning it up. I did a small amount of clean up on one side of the face. and it doesn't look too bad. Still this might look better if there was a good hi-res scan. I can scan it for you and do the clean up if you don't have the equipment. Send me a pm if your interested.

My final efforts on this. At least improved over the original.

Far from perfect, the hair would need a lot more work, but its a start.

I reconstructed the background. Used levels, healing brush, clone tool, and painted various areas.
