color a black and white

take any color image duplicate it and switch the
copy to lab mode and use the L channel
to color back the same colors but
it doesn't work. yes I switch the l channel
back to rgb mode

I know to add a new layer in color
mode and paint in this layer but the
colors become to bright or off in
some way.

I know u need to adjust either the black
and white photo or use a hue/sat or selective
color adjustment but to get exact seems
difficult.

I know color tones r continuous but can
u paint back the same colors the original
had before u desaturated it???

Hi nazca13, if all you want to do is add back color after you have desaturated it you can use the history brush. "Y"
