Hello, this is my first post here. I've been scanning in old photos and doing some color correction with GIMP, mainly using curves. In the attached photo when I get the colors about right, yellow splotches appear in various places. I've seen some posts for removing stains and spots, but was interested in a way to remove these all at once using some combination of layers and masking. Unfortunately, I am a layer noob, so some of the descriptions for doing this just don't translate. Any help in this area (or a pointer to it) would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Removing yellow splotches
Hi
Nice Chillin.
Tom,
I tried it in The Gimp and it is not quite as easy because the Hue/Sat tool appears to affect the luminosity more than in Photoshop. Even changing the blending mode of the Hue/Sat layer to colour still affected the luminosity. I found the best results were achieved by setting the Hue/Sat layer to Lighten Only mode.
The first picture below is the Hue/Sat layer which shows how the luminocity has been changed (darkened)
The second picture is with the Hue/Sat layer set to Lighten Only mode.
Regards
Ken

Re: Removing yellow splotches
My offering would have been to go to channels and go to the blue channel. Use the dodge brush and paint over the darker areas with a very low opacity (shadows selected) or use your wacom pen. Very good for subtle changes.

Re: Removing yellow splotches
Hi
Sorry for bumping this thread but I am new here and curious on this particular posting.
Why not use a colour blending layer instead of HSL layer? I was having a quick go with that last night and was obtaining some good results.
I found the HSL technique depended hugely on the light quality at my workstation and a good eye. I struggled to deal with the yellow on the jacket using HSL.

Re: Removing yellow splotches
This may be simplistic but I went into hue/saturation and desaturated yellows.Attached Files

Re: Removing yellow splotches
I think both methods are fine. I did colour blending with the following result. I actually found the colouring in quite therapeutic!!!! I also passed it thru a noise filter and VivazaAttached Files
