  • nail polish on baby photo's

My very young daughter was practicing her make up skills with mums nail polish. I dont have copy's of the them. What can i do to remove the nail polish. Now that they are scanned i thought about trying nail polish remover but i think it will probably eat the image away. Have looked the channels individually and dont see much hope there. Would be grateful for any tips.

I have three images . Am thinking one of them might be easier to work on.

Re: nail polish on baby photo's

If you want to try physical cleaning and after you are sure you have made the very best scan you can (as your backup) of the images then I would suggest first trying something like Pec12 http://www.cameraclean.co.uk/PEC-12.php.

No guarantee that it will actually work on a hardened nail varnish though but it might be a better option than using nail polish remover which is based on Acetone. If Pec fails then perhaps consider trying nail polish remover on an old colour print (ideally the same age as your originals!) after first painting on some nail polish and allowing to harden?

Very much appreciate your advice Tony. Ive not heard of Pec-12. Just did a search online of the product and it sounds perfect . I know the images are probably irremediably damaged but Pec-12 sounds like the best solution. I will purchase the product from ebay. In between time will attempt to clean up the photos using photoshop. If anyone in retouchpro knows how i might garner some lost detail in the face using photoshop channels, calculations or apply image.. etc. Something that i might use so as to keep the face as sincere to its true form, please would you share your experience with me.
Thanks again Tony . Pec-12 is something i know i will use again after trying it on these images.

Re: nail polish on baby photo's

I think you have done a very good job of rebuilding the damaged information. As a suggestion perhaps look at adjusting the colour balance as it appears a litte too red in places on the skin.

I cannot think of any way of tackling this with channels, calculations or apply image due to the fact that the nail varnish has obliterated pretty much all detail in all the channels.

Re: nail polish on baby photo's

Thanks Tony for the encouragement. Ive been using the save for web option in photoshop to compress the file to requirement, and it seems to saturate the color. Will upload one more retouch for review.

Do you have a high quality scan image that you could send, I restore photos and would like to work on the image, like a new challenge.

Re: nail polish on baby photo's

My attempt at cleaning the image up, only about half way through, need to use the nose from another image to put into this, bit of cleanup round the eyes and general cleanup and then this will look good as new.

Be great to hear what people think.

Further tweaking done. Not completely finished but looks a lot better I think.

                          Hello Photo-arena,
I like what you have done with the photo. Sorry i didnt get back earlier, i have been quite busy. Heres another attempt.

The second baby photo that i uploaded was the hardest of all. In the end i gave up on it. I worked on in for a couple of hours and thought i had a good result. Next day i looked at it a fresh, it looked liked someone else entirely different..

Thank you photo area for retouch, but i dont think the second image i uploaded would be worth your while, Im sure you could do better than i did but i dont believe it could be worth your time. Unfortunately i dont have more images taken on the day, that would be useful to lend from.
Not sure how to upload anything larger than 100kb files. But you're right, work as fine as this needs a better starter image.
