  • how do I remove paper texture from old photo

Hi, I'm restoring an old photo that has a grid-like pattern from the paper it was originally printed on. I'm wondering how to remove it? The texture or grid is most evident in the highlights of the image.

I've attached a detail. (I sharpened the image to try to make the texture more visible in the example.) Thanks for your help.

I would throw it to a "high" layer. Make a mask like that, and replace it with the texture you like as a clipping mask.

umm that looks like a great selection, what photo editing software is that? Photoshop, GIMP?

        I'm using photoshop CC15, Nezbitten.

I don't actually want any texture, Tulack so not sure why I would want to replace the existing texture with another texture. I occasionally use frequency separation, but am not too familiar with Luts (I'm kind of old school user) although I'd like to learn more if you want to elaborate.

You may want to try FFT filter. There is one linked to on this forum or you may want to look at ImageJ a stand alone app.

As can be seen from the attached most of the texture gone, still leaving a good deal of clean up work

That looks great, Tony and would greatly reduce the amount of clean up work! I looked at the retouch pro tutorial and the link to the stand alone filter is no longer working. I also googled ImageJ and Fast Fourier Technique but am not finding a link to the filter that still works. If you have a link to the stand alone application that would be great! The filter would need to run on a mac. Thanks.

The Mac links DJJoofa below - appear to be working but I use Windows OS so cannot confirm

ImageJ download (FFT and IFFT to be found under the Process menu)

              Hope this helps

thanks for your help Tony. The DJoofa brings up a message "unable to talk to the server" when I try to register it and the link for ImageJ is bringing un an internal server error. "The server encountered an internal error or misconconfiguration and was unable to complete your request..." so I'm not having much luck.

Everything has a texture. Sweater should have sweater texture. If you don't need any just take a smudge tool and paint away. I used LUT creator because I didn't want to open PS. You can do it in photoshop. It's a "key" channel and curve to adjust it

OK, I misspoke. I don't want texture that distracts from the image which I feel that the grid does in the highlight parts of the image where it is quite visible.

Another reason I don't want the grid texture is because it may call attention to the fact that the retouched image will be printed on textureless paper and will be a reminder that the picture has been retouched and is not the original if that makes sense.

You can put any texture you wish.

I guess I don't want to introduce a texture that wasn't there in the original but I'm curious and if you want to post an example, I'd like to see.

You can replace the grid texture with random grain/noise in the hf layer in the highlights. Something should be there just not the grid pattern.
                          --shift studio

ok, I did intend to put a random noise/grain pattern over the entire image when I finished, but would putting it on top and clipped to the highlights in the hi frequency layer be much different?

I would go over all with grain. But highlights may require extra. You'll have to make that decision while viewing at 100% in ps.

I've tried the FFT tutorial here on retouch pro, but the end result that I get is just a slightly different shading on the image, the texture seems to all remain in tact. Can anyone get the texture off of this image and tell me perhaps what I am missing?...

Is there a way to remove the texture from an old photo that is part of the texture of the paper, and yet retain sharp details? The texture is a pattern seen in many old photographs. You may not see it in the photo.. and I have made the main photo smaller to upload here (you can see it there). larger...
