Cool! Kevin you are right... the key is to check the "relative option". I've been doing the hardway for a long time....

    thanks a lot!

The minimal action to accomplish this would be 2 or three steps.
    • Set the background color to the color you want your border
    • Image > Canvas Size and turn on the relative option. Then type in the border amount in the height and width fields (remembering to double the border so it's that amount on each side--that is, if you want a 20 pixel border on all sides, you'd specify 40 pixels each for height and width.)
    • Save as desired

Then use the File > Automate > Batch to tell Photoshop what files to work on (via the Browser or a folder), and what to do at the end (save to another folder being the safest).

Go get a cup of coffee, and when you come back, the files should be ready.

RE: "Sorry if I confuse you."

No problem. My wife does it all the time!

Among the actions installed with Photoshop are a couple that build frames with 50 pixel sides. If you're looking to create an action to do this, these would be good ones from which to learn.

If you haven't discovered these yet, open the Actions Palette menu. "Frames.atn" should be among those listed. Load this set and check "Wood Frame" and "Brushed Aluminium."

actually you are right. what i mean is a a constant border.

lets say you have 3 images with different sizes:
    400 by 600
    500 by 700
    700 by 500

after applying the constant border(40 pixel in each side) whether it is action or script, the images will become:
    440 by 640
    540 by 740
    740 by 540

    Sorry if i confused you.
    Thanks

    Perhaps I misunderstood your post.

If you want to apply same border size regardless of image size, a single action will do it.... no need to write a script that assesses image size before applying the border.

    RE: Scripting
If you do decide to go this route, check the Photoshop forum at www.Adobe.com, where there is a subforum dedicated to scripting topics, questions/answers.

yes. your right. i want to run one action against all the images and have the action apply a constant boarder (ex. 40 pixels in each side) regardless of image size.

scripting? hmm.. maybe i'll try to learn it first.

does anybody have a ready script?

If what you're trying to accomplish is something like:
    * You have a folder of images of different sizes
    * You want to run one action against all the images and have the action apply a different border depending on image size...

... this cannot be done by an action, whether played standalone or in batch.

If you know how to program in JavaScript or Visual Basic (I don't) and have Photoshop 7 installed, you could write a script to do this after downloading the PS7 scripting plugin from Adobe.com.

Another option would be to organize images in folders according to the size border you want to apply and play the 1/4" border action against one folder, the 3/8" border action against another folder, the 1/2" border action...

Does this help or make things worse?

Script or action for 50% guides
    by Doug Nelson
I'm trying to make an action that will apply vertical and horizontal guides at the 50% mark in any image, with no success. The action records the absolute position, not the relative position.

Am I just approaching this wrong, or is this something that will require a script?
