Black and white tonality

Hi,
Im a big fan of steven chees work.
i was wondering how he achieves such interesting tonality in his black and white beauty shots? examples here:

also with his color prints, there is a similar feel to it: but the color does not look natural. very dark skin tones.
any ideas?

For the colour images, I think a duplicate layer turned to black and white and then set to multiply at about 60-80%. The b&w images could have been processed a variety of ways, from a b&w adjustment layer to a channel mixer layer or perhaps even a plugin like silver efex - who knows? A million and one ways to achieve it really.
