The Lara Jade Technique

Hey everyone,
I was curious about this image from Mrs Jade's website (c) Lara Jade, how was this dreamy look achieved? I suppose it has nothing to do with the aperture as no lens that I know of could produce that dreamy and soft bokeh so I can only guess that this was done in post?

The right hand image could be achieved in camera by using a filter with a light smearing of vaseline around the filter leaving a small area in the centre free. Will take a bit of playing around with the amount (usually very small) of vaseline and the aperture

You apply the vaseline or similar to an old filter UV or Skylight will do or even a piece of glass. If you like what you get and want a more permanent solution then get hold of some clear nail varnish and paint away adding layers until you get the result you need.

Yes of course there are many ways that you can try without this mess. Assuming Photoshop or similar filters available in your application

1. Play with the various blurring filters in PS on a duplicated layer of your image until you get the effect you want overall. Then add a mask and paint back where you want the effect removed.
Consider if you need to add a further adjustment layer clipped to the blur layer to play with contrast and colour in the blurred area.
Remember that you can also adjust the opacity of the layer to lessen the effects.

2. If you have CS6 play with the Field/Iris/Tilt. Masking, contrast and opacity adjustment the same as above

Very old technique. And you are correct, it does take some testing to get the right effect.
