  • Assue the color consistency - product / final imag

Hello, I have been asked the following:

As a digital retocuher, how can I assure the color consistency between a real product and a final photo of it?

I woudl really appreciate your help.

    Thank you!

Have the actual product in a color correct light booth near your hardware calibrated monitor. Correct the image on screen to be a close match to the product itself.

Then get a press proof made and compare the proof to the product in a color correct light booth. Now make adjustments to the file based on the proof. IOW, if the proof is 5% too red relative to the product, pull 5% red from the file.

    Rinse, Lather, repeat.

There a lot of coloured metals and plastics that actually don't translate very well in to process colours. I save a lot of time by producing a test strip: ie subdivide the image into strips of 6 or so best guesses of varying colour strengths/mixes and output a high quality proof. If you don't hit the target colour, subdivide the best guess in to further strips and proof again. It takes no time at all and I normally do it before I get cracking on the pixel pushing.
