  • RYU x MIKI Style

I was trying to figure out how to retouch like RYU x MIKI. They have this way of making images look 3D, but in a subtle, more realistic way than high pass layers.

    Their site: http://ryuxmiki.com

It looks almost like I'm looking at slide film on a light panel. I can't figure out if it is a post processing technique, or their cameras.

Is it medium format film? Or maybe a PhaseOne back? Really sublte dodge and burn?

    Any opinions would be awesome!

It's always DNB, but with so many looks, I don't understand what you're pointing at?

Like, this colorful one has this sculptural feeling going on.

The other, with the chairs, looks like she is popping out from the background, and the clothes feel so 3D.

      I don't know, it's tripping me out.

Maybe it's some subtle dodging and burning and maybe a low aperture on the lens?

I don't know about medium format, but the color on the first image does look pretty deep. Love it

It's called knowing how to style, do make up, model, light and shoot. Everything counts.

What I can tell you directly is that the first one used dnb to somooth out skin, and that "3D" effect is just dodge and burn to give it some "shape". Nothing out of this worldly.

Google dodge and burn, or look at Natalia Taffarel's DVD. Also Krunoslav Sttiftek(if that is the right name Art of dodge and burn).

            Thanks!

I don't know though. Would light really make a person look and feel 3D without using photoshop to dodge and burn? I mean sometimes I think it might, but everyone on here seems to emphasize that it's all done in photoshop?

Anyway, I found their Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ryuxmiki great stuff

Trust me, as someone who has struggled for two years to become great at photography and post production, nothing comes close to these results out of the camera.

              DNB and color adjustments.

So you say, but I suck at DNB, so how do I make my images look like these?

Well, I sucked, too, and probably still do compared to a lot of people here, but my "eureka" moment was when I've simply gathered enough references in my brain, so that I can recognize what image needs what.

My suggestion is to shoot something as similar photographically to your inspiration, then try to replicate the rest in post production. After 100 trial and errors, you'll be amazed how good you'll become. Just be brave. Experiment.

And emulate looks, like I said. See what you like, analyze, try to repeat.

Look at the attachment, it is not mine, it is off google search, it is nothing but Light and D&B - Just like what @skoobey said. No Magic!!! Just learn where to place the light, where to D&B.

You see how the hand have this 3D effect to it! as if it is popping off the page.

I do, but yikes, the model, the light, the retouching and the pose... it's all terrible in that example. I look deeper into more complex D&B. I think next time you should select better quality images for examples. It doesn't compare to the work we're analyzing here, haha.
