i took a group photo with a strong flash to the side which created some strong shadows on the backdrop. What is the best way to removed the shadows from the background?

I am doing a composite of an athlete in a desert. I struggle to get the shadows (especially on and around the feet) to look realistic.

Hi Everyone
I'm just wondering it it's possible to desaturate certain areas of an image, either highlights, mid tones or shadows.
What I'm looking to is to selectively desaturate (not completely) the shadows within an image and not based on any particular colour etc.

on the attached image 1.jpg, i'm trying to dodge the white background to pure white while maintaining the natural shadows of the plate and cup.
I'm having issues with two things:
1) while dodging the background to white, even with the softest brush, it creates...-

by rebeccawi have been driving myself crazy for months trying to eliminate shadows caused by the camera's flash on this picture - especially around his face (without distorting his profile)
any help would be HUGEMONGOUSLY appreciated - i'm using photoshop 7.0
