  • Drastic DNB. How to make texture follow form?

Now, I know what can be done with dnb etc. However, let's say I'm doing something like this http://alexretoucher.com/portfolio/10cska.html. Obviously there is qute a bit of painting involved, but if the image is not lit with a hard light, and even then, texture is not "following" form (obviously as I am affecting the tone, but not the radius). So, I was thinking maybe sharpen at "darken" and "lighten" layers in order to bring out at texture level what I'm brining out globally? I do NOT want to paint every pore

    Try this:

    1. make a history snapshot
    2. flatten image and convert mode to CMYK
    3. go to channels, select yellow channel, press Ctrl + A to select all, then Ctrl + C to copy the channel
    4. select last snapshot to go back in history, make a new empty layer and paste (Ctrl + V)
    5. Change blending mode to soft light, overlay, hard or linear light

This will add some strong contrast to skin tones

Then, do some masking, dodge and burn...

    Hope this will help

Camera Raw Can take you pretty far.
Notably cranking the Clarity, and raising shadows, highlights, and contrast. Lessen Vibrance and play with HSL a bit.

Great advice, I don't play with the conversion enough!

And the reason I posted thew screenshot was to show that if +100 clarity, etc, isn't enough you can run it through more than once.

You can process the raw thru ACR, apply strong settings, and open it in PS as an embedded raw smart object. Then if you have CC which allows ACR to run as a filter you can run it thru ACR again as a smart filter on the embedded raw (as many times as desired) for additional effect. So all these multiple applications are not only adjustable/reversible, but applied to the raw data.

(Assuming one has the raw file to work from, of course.)

Re: Drastic DNB. How to make texture follow form?

I have an action that I put together based on Calvin Hollywood global D&B, it should take you at least 50% of where you want to be. I looked the tutorial links, but there are many of them by C.H. I wanted to paste a link, I can't find it.

I am welling to post the action for you to download, problem is, it is just one action of many actions within an action set that I developed over the years.

If anyone shows me how to extract an action from an action set, I will post it on my server for download.

After you run this action, you will need to apply a Macro D&B adjustment layer, it should not take you more than 5 minute to do, even much less. I will include it in a PSD file with the action. It is a nice D&B technique that is handy for various applications.

I have attached a very very crude lousy sample, took me 9 minutes to do, you can see the over dodge on some of the edges, it is not "halo", just over dodge on the edge, it spilled over to BG , I just wanted to give you an idea. I spent like 10 minutes, I would have done better job. With care, you will be able to do good job. By no means, my work is not so subtle! I over burnt to emphasis the effect.

Let me know if this is what you are looking for.

In the action pallet create a new Action Set (folder) for the action to reside. Opt/Alt drag it to copy it from the set it's currently in to the new one you just created. Save that new Action Set, that save what you will upload. After saving it you can delete it from your action pallet since you copied the action into it and should therefore still have it in it's current location.

                @ Aladdin

That is the exact opposite of what I wanted to do. It's quite easy to DNB things globally, but there isn't that much need for a local adjustment in images where figure is quite small, so I just enhance it with sharpening.

                  @skoobey

It is both, one global and one local, you really have to use the global to set the mood, then, you would use the local to adjust where you want the effect to be, you can use one without the other. You will see from the psd file how it is done.

I just got to my desk now, I should be able to upload the action and sample psd file sometime tomorrow. It is 2:30 am where I am now.

@Flashones: Thanks for the tip. I did not know this about actions.

Here is the atn file http://www.aiphotostudios.com/Calvin.atn
                    The psd file http://www.aiphotostudios.com/DBsample.psd

It is too late for me to do explain the psd file, I should have few minutes tomorrow to explain how the local DB layer works. For now, just select the mask on either the dodge or burn curve, bring "feather" back down to "0" form 5 (it is 5 due to the fact that it is a jpg off the web, for real psd file, it will be around 40) - This will show you how the D and B are done using white brush of reasonable size.
