  • Medium/Large format like retouching

Hi everyone, I am interested to (try to...) reproduce/emulate in Photoshop the look/feel and soft tones of photographs that comes from medium/large format cameras.

Actually I don't really know how translate the feeling in words...

Like those kind of shots :

    Pic 1

    Pic 2

    Pic 3

    Pic 4

So, is there a way to replicate this in Photoshop with RAW from my Sony A7R ?

    Thanks !

Of course, you just need to be really good at color correction and have a similar shot.

Because you are asking, I guess you are not well versed at that, so I would suggest trying out VSCO filters for all those retro film looks.

It depends on the image you start with. Can you post one of yours? (Link to a raw file on Dropbox.)

Soft tones are not exclusive to medium format or large format, they can be achieved with any camera.

The main advantage of medium or large format is image resolution. Higher quality, which means more detail.

Every other aspect is up to the photographer, not the camera.

I guess you're right, I'm considering taking an IRL class on advanced retouching techniques, but I need to find the right one...

I processed one of your raw files alongside one of the target images. Is this the kind of result you're after? Seems to me it's mainly a matter of lightening up colors (one way to do this is with Selective Color, by decreasing the black levels in various colors), and brightening (with curves, among other ways) without clipping.

Here is a comparison, with the default jpeg of your image on the right, my edit on the left:

Yes, we're not far from the result. I will try your process tomorrow on another one. Maybe it's also a matter of taking a step back from/straying from my own photographs a bit...

Thanks anyway for the effort and the time you took on this. I will work some pictures with your guidance in mind, I like your idea to put a reference image alongside the one to retouch in order to keep in mind the result I want.

                  Thanks !

Here is one I did entirely in Adobe Camera Raw. The attached .xmp file has the settings.

In the spirit of what we said previously, do you know any online resources/classes to better understand colors, lights and tones in a picture ?

Any art college will do. Topic is way too wast to learn it from a couple of tutorials. Developing esthetic taste takes studying art.

Try a Google search for articles, and also check on Youtube. There are tons of tutorials available.

                                Hi all,

I've been looking at a lot of headshots lately to prepare for a couple of projects I've got lined up. I picked up British GQ and really liked the Robbie Williams cover. I took a similarly composed self portrait and set about to duplicate the look and feel. I'm kind of at a loss......
