    RetouchPRO LIVE with Dennis Dunbar
    Retouching Computer-Generated Images

On Saturday's RetouchPRO LIVE, professional retoucher and compositor Dennis Dunbar returns. This time Dennis will be discussing the impact of CGI (computer-generated images) on the retouching industry. He'll also walk us through a real-life example of retouching a CG image (see attached before/after).

Re: RetouchPRO LIVE - Retouching CG Images

I work a lot with renders and note that, although ostensibly perfect, the devil is in the detail. A product designer's CAD drawing can throw up a few wobblies when imported to Maya to create a 'photographic' finish: bevelled edges, flexible components and cutaways can be interpreted as visibly plausible but incorrect details. Furthermore the lighting effects are only as good as the operator deems sufficient to get the job done so perfection is not guaranteed! All of these issues are quicker to fix in PS. Then there is the initial 'hit' of converting 32 to 16 bit, RGB to CMYK etc and as featured, those damned blending modes that do not convert. I just strip the 32 bit layer stack down to basics and convert all modes to selections which can be used in CMYK. Naturally the original is always in my back pocket for further detail scavenging if required. Other than that, render retouching is the same as photo retouching. Nice series of shows recently Doug.

Ok, let's try this one last time (perhaps).

Last month's Audience Showcase got a little awkward. We had lots of uploaded images, which is excellent. We had plenty of people in the audience, also excellent. The trouble was only 5 of the images...
