This tutorial demonstrates the technique of channel masking on a sample image. Different images will require that you do slightly different things than what I show here. [details]

Adapting tutorial Basic Channel Masking for Elements

Can this tutorial be adapted for Elements 2? I don't believe that Elements has the capacity to load channel as a selection for instance.
    Thanks. Olive

Richard Lynch's book has a technique for this in Elements. See his "Hidden Power" subforums down in the Education forum.

Marvellous, Doug! I must go and re-read Photoshop Channel Chops which I learned a lot from first time through, but clearly not quite enough!

What if the background is not contrasty enough?

What to do if none of the channels give contrasty ( esp. white/light shade) background. In that scenario, creating a mask is a hair splitting job. Suggestions are most welcome.
            thanks
