by peejaywI am very new to PS but love the effect of coverting a photo to BW by desaturateing it then using the history brush to paint back in colour in specific areas. Problem is, how do I make the BW part of the photo more dynamic, contrasty etc without affecting the colour part?

In RGB mode, is it possible to apply a layer mask to a component channel in a layer, instead of affecting all three channels (RGB) at once? I'm guessing no, since every layer has only one alpha channel for transparency (A). But what about a simulation?

Very often I ctrl+A and ctrl+C a channel, come back to layers, ctrl+V.
Sometimes I get a NEW gray scale layer, that's what I wanted.
But sometimes it just pastes into the current layer, make it gray scale. How come? I can not find the pattern.
