Am going through that process now and after reviewing Steve's site as well as others narrowed it down to the Canon Power Shot 3 IS and the Fuji FinePix s6000 fd. A little more than the $250 you wanted to spend but not significantly more. I'm sure that there are another 100 cameras out there that would serve my purpose but I am just about definite on the Fuji.

I've got the Fuji S5600 and I can't fault it. That retails for around £120-£150 which I think works out at around $250 or less.
