  • Defrag hard drive

It used to be that I defragged my hard drive frequently, but lately I've been using the option to analyze the drive to see if it needs to be defragged. Even though for the last three weeks or so, I expected the drive to need to be defragmented, when I analyze it, I'm told it does not need to be defragged. Is this a good indicator, or should the drive be defragged every week or so regardless of what the analysis indicates?

I was wondering that too but mine says the same thing. I've had my machine longer than you. What gives? I expected to have to defrag long ago but according to that option I don't need to.

If you haven't been adding/deleting numerous things, the drive probably wouldn't need a defrag. Photos in and out would not leave gaping holes the way programs would. There are 2 schools of thought regarding constant defragging. Some say a few times a year is enough, others at least once a month depending on your usage. I defrag once a week, whether it tells me to or not. I've been doing this for 4 years now and have had no degradation in hd performance. I figure following a set time period prevents me from forgetting to do it completely, which I know would be the case.

Thanks Deb. Makes sense. Most of what I discard is documents and image files. I haven't really uninstalled very many things at all.

Thanks for the replies. I rarely remove programs myself. I do get rid of quite a few images, and what really had me thinking the defrag would be necessary, is the fact that I've had two crashes recently (very uncommon).

Ed I use Norton Utilities not only to defrag but check for registry errors and a host of other problems. I do this once every 2-3 weeks routinely. It's very very seldom I have any problems.

              Hard Drive Recommendations
              by T Paul
Well it has been a year and it looks like I am about to lose my hard drive for the second time. It does take an extremely long time for things to load so I guess that is my clue.

I ran the free PC Pitstop test and it flagged my C drive's extremely slow performance. It is a Maxtor...

              Yet another hard drive question
              by Ed_L
After I installed the new 60 gig hard drive, the computer would only recognize 32 gigs. My son-in-law, who is quite good with computers, came over last night, and he found that I put a jumper on the hard drive that shouldn't have been there. After removing the jumper, the full 60 gigs showed up. Today,...

Disk partitioning - to do or not to do?
              by jeaniesa
I've had a new 60G hard drive sitting in my office for about a month now. I bought it before I realized I needed a new BIOS that would support a disk that size, so had to wait for the BIOS chip to arrive - which it did the day before I left for the Thanksgiving holiday and there was no way I was going...

              Backing up your images
              by htown
I was wondering what people do to backup their images. I find that I line to have my images at my finger tips at all times. I am not a professional so I don't have lots and lots of projects to store but have collected over 30,000 images of the past several years. These are all, or at least most, in...

              Two hard drives
              by thomasgeorge
Anyone else out there running two hard drives? I have been running this config. since a nasty incident a couple of years ago left me without operating system, software or data. I now use one drive dedicated only to programs and operating system, the other data storage. Just this week this set up saved...
