I purchased Painter X a few months ago, and now I am pulling my hair out. Can anybody point me in the right direction to learn Painter X, without paying $300 for learning DVDs. Thanks
I had the same problem when I started to use Painter...I bought most of the available books. I found Jeremy's to be the best. I'm still learning. Like everything else it takes practice and getting familar with the software. I did breakdown and bought one of Jeremy's DVD series. He is quite detailed and does a good job of explaining the use of painter. I also joined this forum...http://www.digitalpaintingforum.com/...I should spend more time there learning, but what time I do have I end up on Retouchpro...There is also a New magazine called Painter which you usually can find in Barnes and Noble which is also a good resource. http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/
Consider "Intro to Painter" online training offerings at LVS Online (http://lvsonline.com/) or Eclectic Academy (http://www.eclecticacademy.com/). No Painter knowledge or "painting skills" required or expected. Intro classes focus on "the basics of Painter," not specific styles like oils, watercolor, etc.
Very good content that focuses on basic skills, tools, palettes, terminology, etc. The approach is organized and structured (vs. learning Painter "willy-nilly") plus, unlike books, one gets to interact with a "real live" and highly qualified instructor for Q/A at any time.
About $25-$30 U.S. total for a 6 week class = very, very reasonable compared to commercial DVDs, which tend to teach a particular painting style and are usually better suited for people who know their way around Painter.
Once you get a handle on the fundamentals, terminology, palettes, tools, etc., then other learning sources make a lot more sense.
I agree that the Jeremy Sutton books are very good as is the content at Paint Outside the Frame forum, but not as sources for learning the basics of Painter by newbies.
I am thinking about buying Painter X and wondering how long this version has been out and if anyone has heard or has any idea when the next version will be out. Don't want to buy it have new version come out in a few months

Welcome to RP. Nice to have another Canon fan among us.
Painter 8 came out in 2003; IX in 2005, IX.5 update (which included fixes plus a few enhancements) in 2006 and X about a year ago (1Q 2007). So it looks like about a 24 month release cycle between major versions. I've not heard/read any version 11 rumors, but it is no doubt in development.
Hope this helps. Good luck getting started with Painter.
