A while back Doug asked on the Adobe forums about deeper info on the blend modes found in Photoshop, including the new ones found in v7.
Although this link does not cover Photoshop, many blend modes are explained in further detail. It also has a primer on the basics of imaging too. Although a Deneba Canvas tutorial, it is applicable to many other image editors:

The 'bible' on this topic is an old book called 'Photoshop Channel CHOPs'. The old Kai's Power Tips on CHOP's can also be considered to be ground breaking as well when it comes to inter-channel math.
