It doesn't surprise me. Adobe is also rapidly pricing themselves out of the consumer market. Even our community college can't afford their licensing fees and hasn't upgraded lately. Not all of us are happy with spending so much money on Adobe products. If the Cloud helps, then I'm happy for them.

At this time I will not go subscription based for any application. So it looks like I will be staying with CS6 for the forseeable future. I think that this move may actually help other application developers by giving them the incentive to develop a feature for feature alternative to PS without following a subscription based service.

I believe that Lightroom will be available outside of the Cloud so I am quite happy with that as long as support for new cameras continues. If for some reason this changes I think I would be quite happy to go DNG and move to another raw application of which there are a few - Capture One for instance.

As someone who just upgraded to Adobe CS6 Master Collection in December 2012, all I have to say is that Adobe can frankly go to hell! Very nice scam Adobe ran last year encouraging users of CS3 and above to upgrade to CS6 at a special price - which is still a lot of money that I had to save over a period of time. Nice how they did not mention they were killing off the product.

You can always tell when the management of a company develops a God complex - they start treating customers like they are employees and they think can shit on them as they please. I'd frankly like to see a class action law suit against them for this scam! I want a refund Adobe!

The only thing that comes to mind when I hear "Cloud" powered is the campfire bean scene from Blazing Saddles. Especially now, since Adobe has clearly demonstrated what it is full of.

Adobe is making a huge mistake with this. Their arrogance reminds me of Apple and it's attitude that is we know best and the rest of you are just sheep. I'll stick with CS5 and Adobe...well...you know what you can do with your cloud crap.

True. For instance, at the moment in OSX Mountain Lion Apple "lets" you run apps not from the App Store (you have to specifically make this allowance in preferences). But at any time they can take that option away. And probably will.

I was just reading more comments on the original article and those who support the subscription model say, well, it's only $20 a month for Photoshop. The it dawned on me that Pixelmator (love it or hate it notwithstanding) is a single $15 and you own it!

This is the thin end of the wedge. Whatever the marketing bods say (and there are some benefits) it's all about locking users in to their product. Apple have been going that way slowly but surely and so, in future, I will consider alternative brands. I have an office and a home filled with i-this and i-that and it worries me that a time will come when it will be too much hassle to change. If someone comes up with a realistic alternative to PS (in the way InDesign stuffed the arrogant Quark) I may be tempted. I am not a luddite and the cost of PS is negligible but when I buy something I want that to complete the transaction unless I see fit to maintain contact..
